Your Brain on Magic Mushrooms

For more than 9000 years human beings have, in some form or other, been taking drugs. More specifically they have been taking some form of the fungi known as magic mushrooms, which cause a happy elated feeling occasionally accompanied by hallucinations. Buy what actually happens to the brain on magic mushrooms?

Serotonin Levels are Increased

Magic mushrooms contain a compound known as psilocybin, which is the main psychoactive ingredient in them. When it hits the body it turns into psilocin and it is this that travels to the brain and binds to serotonin receptors. This causes loads of serotonin, which is the ‘happy’ chemical, to influx into the brain, without being taken out by the receptors, hence why you get so happy.

Your Brain Rearranges itself

The feeling of magic mushrooms can last from anywhere upwards of 3 hours, and can feel like anything from 5 minutes to 5 days as it totally alters the brains perception of time. While this is interesting enough scientists have recently discovered that your brain can actually inhibit normal activity and create new random connections between cells. These imaginary connections blur reality and fantasy and through this hallucinations occur.

It Causes the Brain to Expand Consciousness

When taking magic mushrooms, some emotional regions of the brain are activated by the chemicals in the mushrooms, this causes the feeling that you are totally aware of everything. It makes everything more important and in a study carried out  over a third of the participants described taking magic mushrooms and the single most spiritually significant moment in their lives!
