Aged 61 he was with his mistress at the time, who was also shot, after the end of the German occupation. They had made it together to the Swiss border only to discover that the guards had swapped sides. You can imagine the sinking feeling they both had! With this knowledge he turned back and decided to try dressing as German soldier and try to get into Austria along with the mass cover provided. He was discovered and shot by the partisans who took his body back to Milan where he was strung up in the street as proof of his death.
